Spencer Jones, percussion

Spencer Jones is a percussionist, timpanist, and music educator living in Omaha, NE. A native of Broken Arrow, OK, he studied music and history at Oklahoma State University and then moved to Kansas City, MO to study with Christopher T. McLaurin at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory, where he earned a Master’s degree and spent two years in the Artist Certificate program.  He began performing professionally while in graduate school after a successful audition for the Kansas City Symphony’s extra musician list.  Since then he has kept a busy performance calendar, performing most frequently with the Kansas City and Omaha symphonies, as well as the Des Moines Symphony, the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, the Quad City Symphony, and the New World Symphony of Miami Beach, FL. Spencer received additional training as a fellow at The Music Academy of the West, the National Orchestral Institute, the Texas Music Festival, and is a two-time alumnus of the Cloyd Duff Timpani Masterclass. In addition to his primary teachers, he has been privileged to learn from many of the best orchestral percussionists in the country, including Joseph Petrasek, Matthew Strauss, Ted Atkatz, Michael Werner, and many others.

An enthusiastic music educator, Spencer serves on the Artist-Faculty of the Omaha Conservatory of Music–where he teaches privately and oversees all percussion activities–and as Percussion Director for Omaha Area Youth Orchestra.  He frequently visits schools presenting clinics and coaching ensembles. He has a successful record of school percussion instruction, including three years as a marching percussion instructor with the BOA Grand National Champion “Pride of Broken Arrow” at Broken Arrow Senior High School in Broken Arrow, OK.

When not rehearsing, performing, practicing, or traveling, Spencer prefers to spend his time enjoying excellent food and drink with his wife, long-distance running, and devoutly following Major League Soccer and the United States National Soccer Teams.
