Omaha Chamber Music Society
Education & Outreach
The Omaha Chamber Music Society believes that chamber music is a unique form of communication and expression, and that it has much to offer to the community. We are dedicated to bringing chamber music to the community through our education and outreach efforts.
During 2009, Omaha Chamber Music Society presented music workshops to over 150 students through Music in Catholic Schools and the Girl Scouts Great Plains Council's My Summer Place day camp program. These young people heard outstanding chamber music, learned about music, and had a chance to interact with professional musicians. Music in Catholic Schools students also received coaching and a chance to play with visiting artists. In September 2010, the Omaha Chamber Music Society offered its first youth chamber clinic. The workshop was attended by students from throughout the metropolitan area, providing a chance to work on chamber compositions under the direction of local professional musicians. OCMS and Omaha Public Schools are working together to bring a coaching and mentoring program to string students at McMillan Magnet Center. A talented quartet of professional musicians will visit McMillan throughout the spring of 2010 to work with roughly 50 students in the school's strings program.
During the 2009-2010 season, Omaha Chamber Music Society artists will perform five times on UNMC's Music as Medicine series. These free concerts bring music to members of the UNMC community, including patients, physicians, staff, and visitors. OCMS is also working with the Hospice House on a pilot project to bring musicians to the facility, using music to offer comfort and solace to patients and their loved ones.
